Despacito was a track from the year 2017 released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It became the top streamed and downloaded song in the world within the space of six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music not only brought interest back to the genre, but also to Latin music in general. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish mostly, and four tracks in 2016. The Despacito song was at its peak popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it to the top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 songs. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017 shortly after which popular artists began working with reggaeton artists. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018), while Madonna worked on Medellin along with Maluma (2019). In 2020, several Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the advancing of the genre towards the mainstream. Yet, a young generation such as Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. Rauw Alejandro incorporated elements of other genres and electronic music.
